Chapter 39

Asheville, NC

THEY SET the two boxes on the floor beside Bobby’s desk. “Before I arrange my desk, let’s see what we can scrounge from the supply room,” Bobby said. “There’s bound to be some things in there we can both use.”

“Okay,” Carlyle said.

Something in Carlyle’s tone made Bobby look at him. “You aren’t feeling left out of things, are you, Sluggo?”

“Not really, it’s just that I’m new to all this and I don’t really know what to do next.”

Bobby put his arms around Carlyle and hugged him for a long moment. “You’re in precisely the same spot I was in when I started to work at Anderson, Rush.”

“But you had a lot of people to help you, didn’t you?”

“Are you kidding! In a highly competitive firm like that, it was every man for himself. I’ll admit that Zandy sort of took me by the hand for a while, but I was mostly on my own. Anyhow, I’m going to walk you through things, just like Zandy did for me.”

“Yeah, I guess I can’t go wrong with you by my side, can I?” Carlyle said.

“Damn straight. Now let’s go raid that supply room.”

They found the supply room well stocked with pencils, pens, yellow pads, and a host of other supplies, including staplers and Scotch tape dispensers. After making a couple of trips to the room, both of their desks contained all of the necessary accessories.

Bobby and Carlyle finished organizing both offices, and were sitting in Bobby’s side chairs talking when there was a knock on the door.

“Come in,” Bobby said, raising his voice a bit.

Winifred Gaskins walked into the office. She’d been secretary for Bobby’s father and grandfather for many years. Bobby knew that she was a widow, but she looked like a spinster schoolteacher in late middle age with a stern, but kind face. With her was a pretty brunette in her thirties.

“Good morning, Mrs. Gaskins,” Bobby said.

“Now, Bobby,” she said, “that’s no way to greet me. I told you years ago to call me Winifred.”

“Sorry, Winifred,” he said. “I couldn’t really do that when I was just a kid, and it’s going to take me a while to get used to our new circumstances.”

“Well said, Bobby.”

“You know Carlyle, I believe,” Bobby said.

“Of course. And may I present your secretary, Alice Geary. Alice, meet Robert Baskins III and Carlyle Baskins.”

As Bobby shook the young woman’s hand, he said, “Nice to meet you.”

Carlyle shook hands with her and said, “Good to meet you.”

Bobby, suddenly all business, said, “Alice, we can all spend some time getting acquainted later today, but there’s a client coming to see me at one, and I don’t know a thing about his case.”

“I’ll take Alice to the file room and show her how to find case files,” Winifred said. “She’ll bring them to you in a couple of minutes.”

“Where would you like the file, Mr. Baskins?” Alice said.

“How big is the file, Winifred?” Bobby said.

“There are half a dozen file folders and a box of exhibits,” Winifred said.
